Toreros Hold on For 7-6 Win Against UNLV

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (16-10) held off a late University of Nevada, Las Vegas (12-13) rally to capture a 7-6 non-conference win Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.

USD got things rolling in the first inning scoring four runs on three hits. Justin Snyder led off with a single to the second baseman and moved to second on a Ryan Lilly bunt to third base. Steve Singleton then drove in the first run of the game on a RBI single through the right side. The UNLV starting pitcher Chris Saddoris then committed back-to-back fielding errors allowing Lilly and Jordan Abruzzo, who reached base on a fielder's choice, to score and Keoni Ruth and Daniel Magness to safely reach base. The Toreros final run of the inning came on a Shane Buschini groundout to the pitcher giving USD the early 3-0 advantage.

The Toreros tacked on two more runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Abruzzo and Ruth.

The Rebels cut the lead in half in the seventh inning scoring three runs on a Keith Smith run scoring triple, a Chris Bonnell sacrifice fly to left field and a Blake Gailen solo home run over the right field fence.

The Rebels pulled to within one in the top of the ninth inning, but could come no closer leaving the game at its final of 7-6.

Abruzzo led the offensive charge for the Toreros going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Matt Couch (4-0) picks up the win for the Toreros allowing three runs on four hits in eight complete innings of work. Josh Romanski picked up his third save of the season allowing no runs on no hits n 1.0 innings of work. Saddoris (3-4) was saddled with the loss for the Rebels allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits in 5.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in game two of the three-game non-conference series with the Rebels at Cunningham Stadium.
