LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The 21st-ranked university of San Diego baseball team (21-10) dropped a 3-2 decision to UNLV (11-19) Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Wilson Stadium. The Toreros still captured the series, 2-1, as they won on both Friday and Saturday.
The Rebels were able to get out to the early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Xavier Scruggs came across on a fielding error by USD.
The Toreros then evened the score in the top of the third inning. Kevin Muno got things rolling with a stand-up double down the left field line. Kevin Hansen then moved Muno to third on a sacrifice bunt and Muno came across on a Josh Romanski RBI single to right center field.
The Rebels then regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning on another fielding error by USD to take a 2-1 lead.
San Diego then evened the score again in the top of the fifth inning on Shane Buschini's seventh home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence.
The Rebels then came right back and pushed across the inning run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk to avoid the sweep.
Offensively for the Toreros, Sean Nicol led the way with his 2-for-3 performance. Muno was the only other USD player to record multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored.
Ricardo Pecina (4-3) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. Matt Hutchison was credited with the win for the Rebels as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they host cross-town rival San Diego State University in a 3 p.m. game at Cunningham Stadium.
