(Tulsa, OK) - USF earned a series sweep over Oral Roberts with a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon. The Dons (16-13) have won 11 of their last 13 games and hand Oral Roberts (10-11) their first home sweep since 1995.
Junior center fielder Lucas DeLong put the Dons on the board with his lead-off solo homerun in the third, his team leading fifth of the year. Later in the inning, senior short stop Andrew Smith, who reached base on a fielder's choice, scored on an error by Oral Roberts shortstop Tim Torres after a single by senior right fielder Stefan Gartrell.
Oral Roberts tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but USF scored two more of their own in the next frame. Sophomore third baseman Joey Railey doubled and scored when the Golden Eagle's pitcher Daniel Greenwalt committed an error trying to throw him out after a Smith sacrifice. Later, Smith scored on a double by sophomore designated hitter Luke Sommer. The Dons added an insurance run in the ninth after junior left fielder Scott Cousins singled to left center and scored on a single by Sommer and an error.
Sommer had three hits for the Dons in the contest and Railey added two. Others getting hits for the Dons in Sunday's game were Smith, Cousins, Gartrell, DeLong, and junior catcher Jonathan Norfolk.
Senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan (6-1) started for USF, throwing seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, one walk and had eight strikeouts to bring his team-leading total to 45. Junior John Quine earned his third save of the season, and second of the series, after going three scoreless and hitless innings with two strikeouts.
