Malibu, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped its conference opener to No. 10 ranked Pepperdine by the score of 7-3 Friday afternoon from Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Gaels gave up five early runs and were unable to catch the conference leading Waves. After the day, SMC falls to 16-10-1 on the season.
Down 5-1 in the sixth inning, freshman Michael Gonzales pulled the Gaels back into the game on one swing of the bat. Gonzales pulled SMC within two with a two run shot to make the score 5-3. Sophomore Joel Staples was brought home after he singled to left field.
The Waves quickly responded with two more runs to make the score 7-3. Back-to-back-to-back doubles enabled Pepperdine to plate two runs in the frame.
Pepperdine dropped two runs in the first and three more in the third to take the early advantage. The Gaels put one on the board in the third when freshman Anthony Aliotti singled up the middle to plate junior Kenny Fuglerud.
Barry Enright (7-1) earned the victory after allowing three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Saint Mary's Sean Gleason (4-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits with five Ks in 5.2 innings.
Junior Adrian Ortiz led the Waves with a 4-for-5 day. Ortiz tallied three doubles, a RBI and run scored. Donald Brown batted 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Gonzales paced the Gaels at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort and two RBI. Fuglerud also batted 2-for-4 for SMC with a run scored.
Saint Mary's will look to even the series tomorrow in game two of the three-game set. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Eddy D. Field Stadium.
