SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's Gaels (14-13, 1-1 WCC) evened a West Coast Conference series with the 25th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (19-11, 1-1 WCC) with a 5-3 win Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium.
With the score knotted at 3-3 after six innings, the Gaels scored two unanswered runs on an Orben Frederick RBI single in the seventh inning and with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning Delaney Gallagher was hit by a pitch pushing across the final run of the game.
The Toreros scored their first run of the game in the third inning on a Shane Buschini ground out, scoring Steve Singleton, who had singled. USD would push across two more runs in the sixth inning. Buschini led off the inning with a solo home run over the right field fence. The second run of the inning came on a Keoni Ruth bases loaded walk to knot the score at 3-3, but USD could come no closer registering one hit for the remaining three innings to leave the game at its final of 5-3.
SMC would score two runs in the second inning and one in the third to round out the scoring for the day.
Buschini led the offensive charge for the Toreros going 2-for-5 with two RBI and one home run. Singleton ran his hit streak to nine games with his 2-for-5 performance and Jordan Abruzzo ran his hit streak to eight games with his 1-for-5 and one double performance. Ryan Lilly had his 12-game hit streak come to an end in the loss.
Brian Matusz (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out eight in 7.0 innings of work. SMC relief pitcher Dan Lewis (4-1) picked up the win for the Gaels allowing no runs on one hit in 3.1 innings of work.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday in a rubber game at Cunningham Stadium with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
