San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped the rubber game to No. 25 ranked San Diego by the score of 9-4 Sunday afternoon from Cunningham Stadium. The Gaels took an early 4-0 lead but could not hold on as the Toreros tallied nine runs in three innings to earn the victory. After the series, SMC moves to 14-14 overall and 1-2 in West Coast Conference play.
The Gaels jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top half of the third. Junior Eric Cattoni started the scoring with a RBI single to right that brought in sophomore Ian Gordon. The catcher reached on a single through the right side.
Senior Delaney Gallagher then placed a single down the right field line to score freshman Cory Miller. The newcomer reached on a single to the right side. Senior Preston Young then added two more runs for SMC with a double to right field. Cattoni and Gallagher both scored on the play.
San Diego then erupted for nine runs in the next four innings to pull away with the series victory. The Toreros plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth and then added two in the fifth to take the 5-4 lead. USD broke the game open with four more in the seventh.
Daniel Magness did most of the damage for USD. Magness batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. The first baseman belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth.
Steve Singleton and Keoni Ruth combined to drive in five while Singleton finished with two hits. For the Gaels, freshman Joel Staples batted 2-for-4 while Young drove in two. SMC was out hit 14-7 in the game.
Matt Couch (5-0) earned the victory for USD, allowing four runs and seven hits while striking out six in seven innings of work. Ian Farmer (1-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up two earned on nine hits with six walks in six innings.
Saint Mary's will continue its road trip and return to action on Tuesday, April 4 against the University of Nevada. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Reno, NV.
