Los Angeles, CA- Needing a confidence boost from his last two outings, Saint Mary's senior hurler Joel Fountain responded by throwing six strong innings to lead the Gaels to a 5-3 victory over the Lions Friday afternoon from Page Stadium. Senior Preston Young led the Gaels from the plate with three hits, including a home run and two RBIs. After the series opening win, SMC improves to 15-14 overall and 2-2 in West Coast Conference play.
The Gaels took the early 1-0 lead in the top half of the third. Young started off the scoring with a double to the opposite field to score senior Orben Frederick from second. Frederick reached on a single through the right side.
After SMC would tally one more in the sixth on a Young solo shot to make the score 5-1, LMU would tack on a run in the bottom half and another in the eight to pull within two.
That is all they would get as senior Dan Lewis shut the door in the ninth, leaving the Lions with stranded runners on second and third.
Fountain earned the win and improved to 5-3 on the season after throwing six innings and allowing two runs on nine hits. Lewis picked up his first save after tossing the final three innings for the Gaels.
Offensively, the Gaels were led by Young and Gordon, who combined to go 6-for-10 with three RBI. Young's home run was his eighth on the season and 23rd of his career.
SMC will return to action and look to put the series away tomorrow in Los Angeles. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Page Stadium.
