Moraga, CA - In the final game of the three game West Coast Conference series, San Diego defeated the Saint Mary's baseball team 11-1 from Louis Guisto Field on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the series. After the loss, Saint Mary's is now 16-15-1 overall and 0-6 in WCC play. San Diego improved to 26-12 overall and 4-2 against conference opponents.
San Diego starting Matt Couch (5-2) picked up his fifth win of the season, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out seven batters. Combined with three strikeouts by A.J. Griffin, the San Diego duo struck out 10 Saint Mary's hitters. Griffin pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit and struck out three.
With little offensive production of the first three innings, San Diego scored three runs on one hit in the fourth inning. Saint Mary's starter Anthony Aliotti (4-3) gave up three earned runs in the fourth, but allowed just one hit in four innings of work.
After getting Sean Nicol to ground out to start the fourth, Aliotti hit Jordan Abruzzo and walked Shane Buschini, before Logan Gelbrich filed out to right field for the second out of the inning. An error by Aliotti on a pick-off attempt moved Abruzzo to third allowing him to score on a wild pitch to walk Romanski. After a balk moved Buschini and Romanski to second and third, Kevin Muno doubled to left field to play both Buschini and Romanski, giving USD a 3-0 lead.
Mike Nisco replaced Aliotti in the fifth inning and allowed three runs in his first inning of work. Kevin Hansen greeted Nisco with a double to left field and would later score on a one-out single by Nicol. Nicol advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Buschini singled to right field. The final run of the inning came when Gelbrich doubled to left, plating Buschini from first base.
Saint Mary's answered with its only run on the game in the bottom half of the fifth when Joel Staples doubled to right center, scoring Gilbert Urbina, who doubled to open the inning, from second base.
San Diego added four runs in the top half of the seventh and another in the eighth to win 11-1 and sweep the conference series.
Urbina and Staples led the Gaels with two hits each, as they both went 2-for-4 from the plate. Eric Cattoni, who tripled to led of the top of the first, finished the day 1-for-4, Aliotti was 1-for-2 with a walk, and Michael Nieto was 1-for-1 with a double.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Tuesday, April 9 with a non-conference road game against San Jose State. The game between SMC and the Spartans is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. from Municipal Stadium.
