SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga suffered its first home loss of the season as Santa Clara rallied to score five runs in the top of the ninth inning to win, 7-6 on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (22-11, 4-1) held a 6-2 lead going into the ninth but were unable to slam the door shut. Reliever Cory Powell suffered the loss, his first of the season, after giving up six hits and five runs in one inning of work.
Gonzaga had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom half of the ninth with two outs, but stranded runners at second and third.
Jackson Brennan notched his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to lead off the game. The senior from Castle Rock, Colo., added a double and two RBI.
Bulldog batters belted out five doubles, including two by sophomore third baseman Darin Holcomb. Gonzaga now has 71 doubles on the season.
Bronco second baseman Eric Newton hit two home runs, both were solo blasts. Newton now stands one homer back of Brennan for the lead in the WCC.
Senior Bobby Carlson went 3-4 with two runs scored.
The rubber game of the three game series with Santa Clara is set for Sunday afternoon at 1pm.
