Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped its series opener to LMU by the score of 11-3 Friday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. The first five runs of the game were all unearned as the Lions grabbed game one of the series. After the day the Gaels fall to 16-17-1 overall and 0-7 in West Coast Conference play.
The Lions opened the game by scoring two unearned runs in the first. The Gaels answered with an unearned run of their own when Ian Gordon was hit by a pitch to score Eric Cattoni with the bases loaded. Cattoni began the game reaching on an error.
LMU then tallied two more unearned runs in the second. The Lions added the first earned run of the game when Angelo Songo hit a solo shot over the right field wall in the fifth.
LMU added three more runs in the sixth to make it an 8-1 ballgame. The Gaels cut the lead to five when SMC added two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lions answered with three more in the seventh to extend the lead to the final 11-3 score.
Staples batted 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored. Musgrove batted 1-for-2 with a RBI. Eric Farris tallied three hits and scored three runs for LMU while DeAndre Miller batted 2-for-3 with a RBI and four runs scored. Elvis Herrera knocked in five for the Lions.
Brian Wilson (3-4) tallied the win for the Lions. Wilson tossed 5.2 innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs with four walks for the victory. SMC junior hurler Sean Gleason (4-4) was tagged with the loss. Gleason allowed three earned and 10 hits in 5.1 innings.
Saint Mary's will look for its first win in WCC play as the two teams will square off tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
