SANTA CLARA, Calif. - - Bryan Winston and Shawn Wayt, both of the Gonzaga University baseball team, each recorded two hits Saturday as the Bulldogs fell to Santa Clara University 5-3 at Schott Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The game marked the second of a three-game West Coast Conference series, which is now tied 1-1.
The loss drops Gonzaga to 22-17 for the season, including 5-3 against WCC opponents. The win evened the Broncos record at 18-18 and improved them to 5-3 in conference play.
Bulldog starter Brandon Harmon (5-5) took the loss as the junior allowed five runs on nine hit, while walking two and striking out one over 7.0 innings. Matt Fields saw time out of the Gonzaga bullpen, throwing one inning of no-hit ball. Matt Wickswat (5-4) earned the win for Santa Clara. Wickswat allowed two runs on four hits while striking out 10 during 7.0 innings on the mound. Reliever Jeff Lombard earned his seventh save of the season despite allowing one run on three hits in the ninth inning.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a home run to left field by Gabe Alcantar.
Gonzaga responded in the top of the second, knotting the score 1-1. Aaron McGuinness, who walked to reach base before advancing to second on a wild pitch, scored on a double to center field by Wayt.
Santa Clara regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run by Jon Karcich.
The Broncos extended their lead to 4-2 in the fifth frame when Tommy Medica, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored on a Gonzaga error. Media would go on to score an additional run in the seventh inning thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Matt Long.
Down 5-2 in the ninth inning, the Zags attempted a comeback, but fell short plating only one run and leaving the bases loaded to finish the game. Pinch hitter Castellitto drove home the lone inning run with a double down the left field line that scored Wayt.
The Bulldogs and Broncos will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday. Clayton Mortensen (3-2) is expected the get the starting nod for Gonzaga. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
