SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior shortstop Steve Singleton's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the 17th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (24-14, 6-3 WCC) to a 6-5 come-from-behind West Coast Conference win against Loyola Marymount University (15-25, 4-5 WCC) Saturday afternoon in a rubber game at Cunningham Stadium to give USD the series win.
After the Lions pushed across one run in the top of the ninth inning giving them a 5-2 lead, the Toreros dug in and rallied to scored four runs on six hits to claim the win. Ryan Lilly got things rolling when he reached on a throwing error by the LMU pitcher and moved to second on Josh Romanski's single to right center field. Daniel Magness then loaded the bases with his single through the right side. After a pitching change, Kevin Hansen brought in the first run of the inning when he reached on a fielder's choice that got Magness thrown out at second base and scored Lilly. Justin Snyder then singled to right field driving in run No. 2. Keoni Ruth then knotted the score 5-5 with his RBI single to center field. After Jordan Abruzzo singled to load the bases again, Singleton stepped up to the plate and recorded his lone hit of the game, a hard shot to right field which brought in the winning run.
After LMU scored one run in the first inning on a Chris Pettis run-scoring double, the Toreros answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. USD got things rolling with a Kevin Hansen single to right field. Justin Snyder then laid down a sacrifice bunt to the second baseman which allowed Hansen to advance to third on a throwing error by the second baseman. Keoni Ruth then launched the ball deep into right field scoring Hansen and moving Snyder to third. The final run of the inning came when Jordan Abruzzo hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line to the second baseman to give USD a one-run lead.
The Lions then retook the lead in the sixth inning as they scored three runs on five hits. The LMU runs came on a Kyle Mura sacrifice fly to center field and a two-run single by Eric Farris to give the Lions a 4-2 lead.
Offensively for the Toreros, Logan Gelbrich went 2-for-3 and Ruth went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Josh Romanski (1-4) picked up the win for the Toreros allowing one run on four hits in 1.2 inning of work. Roberto Torres (1-5) was saddled with the loss for the Lions allowing one run on two hits in 0.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday when they host the Highlander of UC Riverside in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium with a start time of 3 p.m.
