SPOKANE, Wash. - - Evan Wells recorded a career-high four hits including a two-run home run as the Gonzaga University baseball team defeated Saint Mary's College 7-2 Saturday afternoon at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane. With the win, the Zags secured the West Coast Conference three-game series victory.
The win boasts the Bulldogs' record for the season to 25-18, including 8-3 against conference opponents. Saint Mary's falls to 16-22-1 overall and 0-11 against WCC opponents with the loss.
Clayton Mortensen (5-2) started the game for Gonzaga, earning his fifth win. The senior allowed two runs, one earned on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over 8.0 innings of work. Jeremy Stumetz finished the game on the mound for the Zags, allowing one hit in the final inning of the game. The Gaels' starter Brandon Berl (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 frames.
Saint Mary's scored early, posting the first run of the contest in the second inning, to take a 1-0 advantage. With two outs, the Gaels combined back-to-back hits and a base on balls to load the bases, before a walk would force in Kenny Fuglerud for the inning run.
Gonzaga posted three runs in its half of the third to take the lead 3-1. The first two runs came thanks to Wells' first home run of the season, his two run shot to right center. The Bulldogs then pieced together a walk and a single before Ryan Wiegand hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Bryan Winston, who had reached on the walk.
In the next inning, the Zags' Mike Terry the second two-run homer of the afternoon to extend Gonzaga's lead to 5-1. With one out in the frame, Dustin Colclough singled to right before Terry smacked the home run to right center, scoring Colclough.
Terry scored again on a Wells single in the sixth inning to add insurance runs for the Bulldogs and move the score to 6-1.
The final Zag run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run by Wiegand to right field.
The Gaels added its final run of the game in the eighth to finalize the score at 7-2.
Wells finished the afternoon going 4-for-5 with three singles and a home run, with three runs batted in and a run scored. Wiegand and Terry were the only other Bulldogs with multiple hits, recording two a single and home run a piece.
The three-game conference series between Saint Mary's and Gonzaga will conclude on Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Josh Monroe (5-2) is expected to throw the first pitch for Gonzaga at 1 p.m.
