Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team dropped a West Coast Conference series to Portland by falling 13-4 Saturday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. The two teams combined to rap out 28 hits as the Pilots tallied 17 on the day. After the game, the Gaels move to 17-25-1 overall and 0-14 in WCC play.
The Pilots opened the game with three runs and did not look back as they used four multi-run innings to pull away from the Gaels.
Saint Mary's made it a 3-1 game when they plated a run in the third. Sophomore Ryan Young belted a lead-off home run over the left field wall. The shot is his second on the year.
Portland answered with two straight innings with two runs to pull out to a 7-1 lead. The Gaels cut it to within three when they plated one in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Freshman Randy Wells brought home Young from third on a sac-fly to right. In the sixth, freshman Kyle Jensen plated Anthony Aliotti on a double to left-center. Gilbert Urbina brought home Jensen on a fielder's choice.
Saint Mary's starter Sean Gleason (4-6) was tagged with the loss. Gleason allowed 13 hits and five earned runs in seven innings. Given Kutz (5-4) earned the win, going eight innings and allowing three earned on 11 hits while fanning seven.
Jesse Rodgers led the Pilots attack with three hits. Charlie Herche tallied two hits and three RBI while four others recorded a multi-hit game.
The two teams will square off in the final game of the three-game set tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
