LOS ANGELES - Gonzaga University starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen tossed six shutout innings but it was the other two that saddled him with the loss as Loyola Marymount University picked up a 6-3 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. LMU improved to 20-27, 7-7 in the WCC while GU fell to 7-7 in conference action, 26-18 overall.
LMU scored three runs in the first frame against Mortensen (6-7) who went the distance for the Bulldogs. Eric Farris scored the game's first run on a Mortensen wild pitch. A.J. LaMonda drove home the other two Lion runs with a single to center.
Gonzaga trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the third as Darin Holcomb hit his sixth home run of the season. That would be all the damage Andy Beal would allow as he improved to 4-6 with six innings of work. Lee Roberts worked the final three innings to collect his first save.
LMU put the game away in the fourth with three more runs. Erik Johnson had a two-run single up the middle as he finished with a game-high three hits.
Bobby Carlson, Ryan Wiegand and Zach Woodward all finished with two hits for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga will look to remain above .500 in the WCC on Sunday afternoon as they close out the series at LMU at 1 p.m.
