SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team was unable to capture a West Coast Conference series victory Sunday, falling 10-2 to the University of San Francisco at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco. The series loss marked the time this season the Zags have dropped a conference series, as the Dons earned the series two games to one.
With the loss, the Bulldogs drop to 27-21, including 10-5 against league opponents. San Francisco improves to 23-23 and 6-9 in WCC play.
Gonzaga starter Josh Monroe (6-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk. Tommy Peale (3-1), the starter for San Francisco, threw 7.2 innings en route to the victory. Peale allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three before handing the reigns over to the USF bullpen.
The Zags opened scoring in the top of the first inning. Darin Holcomb launched his sixth home run of the season with a solo shot to right field to give Gonzaga the 1-0 advantage.
The Dons answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second thanks to a one-run single by Matt Lieb and a run-scoring triple by Zach Kim.
Brandon Blank knotted the score 2-2 in the top of the third, when the Bulldogs center fielder hit a lead off home run to left field, for his second long ball of the season.
San Francisco exploded for four runs in the fifth inning to secure a 6-2 lead. The Dons combined sacrifice flies by Derek Poppert and Blake Nelson, as well as run-scoring singles by Chris Bacigalupi and Brian Chavez to score the four runs.
The Dons added a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a three-run home run by Lieb.
USF capped scoring in the eighth frame when Mitchell Bialosky scored on a wild pitch to finalize the score at 10-2.
Holcomb led the Zags on the day, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and a run batted in. Ryan Wiegand, Dustin Colclough, Mike Terry and Blank each recorded one hit a piece in the contest. Holcomb, who is hitting a team-leading .364, led Gonzaga in the three-game series, batting at a .455 clip.
The Bulldogs return to the field next weekend to wrap-up its remaining regular-season home schedule with a three-game WCC series against Loyola Marymount University. The series will start on Friday, May 4, with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The two remaining games of the series will take place Saturday and Sunday with game times slated for 1 p.m. Sunday will also mark Senior Day, in which the Zags will honor five seniors on the team with a pre-game ceremony.
