USF Baseball Defeats UC Davis 12-7

(San Francisco, CA) - USF defeated UC Davis 12-7 in non-conference baseball action at Benedetti Diamond on Tuesday afternoon. The Dons (29-18) evened the season series with the Aggies (13-27) at one game apiece.

With the score tied at one, USF took a two run lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore Luke Sommer led off the inning with his first homerun of the season and senior shortstop Andrew Smith added a two-out RBI single to center. The Aggies would tie it in the fourth after an RBI triple by senior designated hitter Jimmy Goetz and a two-run homerun to center by junior right fielder Aaron Hanke.

The tie would be short lived as USF regained the lead in the fifth, plating one and adding three more in the sixth when junior catcher Daniel Morales blasted a three-run bomb over the left field fence. Davis would again tie the game at seven after plating three of their own in the seventh, but the Dons scored five more runs over the next two innings to secure the win.

Junior right-hander John Quine (3-3) got the win for USF, throwing 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on two hits, one walk and struck out five Aggies.

USF roped 12 hits on the day. Sophomore Joey Railey added three hits to his team leading total, going 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior center fielder Scott Cousins went 1-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Sommer was 1-for-4 and Morales was 1-for-3, both smashing homeruns in the contest. Senior right fielder Stefan Gartrell went 1-for-4 with two RBI, bringing his team leading total to 51 and moving him into sole possession of fifth place all-time with 121. Senior shortstop Andrew Smith was 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, three walks and a stolen base.

Freshman right-hander Andy Boas (0-1) earned the loss for the Aggies, throwing one inning of relief, allowing one run on five hits. Sophomore third baseman Daniel DesCalso and Hanke homered for the Aggies, with Hanke and senior first baseman Lukas Kirby adding doubles. Goetz also tripled for Davis.

USF returns to WCC action on Friday as they travel to Moraga, CA to take on Saint Mary's. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
