SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The ninth-ranked University of San Diego baseball team rallied to score 19 unanswered runs to claim a 19-9 win over the University of San Francisco in a West Coast Conference game Saturday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium in one of the wildest game of the season.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 37-14 overall, 15-2 in the WCC, claim the series over the Dons, have run their winning streak to eight games and have strung together 14 consecutive WCC wins. With the loss, the Dons fall to 24-25 overall and 6-11 in the WCC.
After the Dons scored nine runs in the top half of the fourth inning, the Toreros didn't hang their heads as they simply responded with nine runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning. Daniel Magness, Josh Romanski and Logan Gelbrich got the inning started with back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Sean Nicol then hit a two-run double deep into right center to push across the first two runs of the inning. Kevin Hansen drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly to center field and Mike Metzger drove in the next run with a double down the left field line. Justin Snyder then launched his fourth home run of the season, a two run blast over the right field fence, to move the score to 9-6.
Shane Buschini kept things rolling with a single to right center field and Magness moved Buschini over one bag with an infield single. Romanski did the remainder of the scoring damage with a three-run homer over the right field fence to knot the game at 9-9 and give the Torero fans a huge sign of relief.
San Diego continued to pour the offense on in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring six runs on six hits. The Toreros' runs came on a Gelbrich sacrifice squeeze bunt to the pitcher, a Nicol RBI single, a Metzger RBI single, a two-run single by Abruzzo and a RBI single by Buschini.
The final four USD runs came in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run single by Buschini, a bases-loaded RBI walk by Romanski and a bases-loaded Nicol RBI walk to put the game at its final of 19-9.
Offensively for the Toreros, every batter USD sent to the plate recorded at least one hit and all represented one run scored. Buschini was the offensive hero for the Toreros as he went 4-for-6 with one double and three RBI. Hansen also had a solid day at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Anthony Slama (2-2) picked up the win for the Toreros as he allowed no runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. John Quine (4-3) was saddled with the loss for the Dons as he allowed five runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Dons will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. WCC game at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
