SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For the second consecutive game, senior third baseman Ryan Lilly lifted the University of San Diego baseball team to an 8-7 come-from-behind West Coast Conference victory over Santa Clara University with his walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning.
With USD trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the 10th inning, the Toreros again found them selves in the midst of one run hole for the second time in as many days. Josh Romanski led off the inning with a walk and he moved to second on Mike Lugo's single through the left side. Both runners advanced one base on Justin Snyder's ground out to second base to give USD two runners in scoring position with one out. After Logan Gelbrich flew out to center field, Keoni Ruth loaded the bases with a walk. Jordan Abruzzo was able to push across the tying run on a walk which set the stage for Lilly's heroics. Lilly, stepped to the plate and was able to deliver with the pressure, as he hit a single up the middle to give USD another much needed win.
With the win the Toreros improve to 29-20 overall and move to 10-7 in the WCC, gave head coach Rich Hill his 400th division I career win and moved USD into sole possession of second place, one game behind both Pepperdine University and the University of San Francisco. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 26-21 overall and 7-10 in the WCC.
Santa Clara jumped out the quick lead putting up two runs in the first inning when Kris Watts hit into a double play which scored Kevin Drever, who reached on an error, and the second run came on a Dustin Realini RBI single.
USD would answer back in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs on two hits. The Toreros' runs came by way of a Ruth ground out to the second baseman, a Lilly sacrifice fly to center field and a Steve Singleton RBI single up the middle.
With USD trailing 6-4 heading into the eighth inning, the Toreros bats came alive as USD scored two runs on four hits. With two outs and Singleton on second base, Romanski stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the season over the right field fence to knot the game at 6-6.
Offensively for USD, Singleton and Ruth put up three hits with Ruth going 3-for-5 with one RBI and Singleton going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Lilly, Snyder and Jose Valerio were the other three Toreros to record multiple hits on the day with each getting two.
Romanski (3-4) picked up his second win of the week allowing one run on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. Mark Willinsky (2-3) blew his second consecutive save in as many days allowing two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work.
USD and SCU will conclude their three-game WCC series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Cunningham Stadium.
