USF Baseball Defeats Cal 9-5

(Berkeley, CA) - USF swept the season series over Cal with a 9-5 non-conference win at Evans Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Dons (33-19) are now 5-1 against the Pac-10 this season, including a win over No. 5 Oregon State (2/29) and swept the Bears (24-25) for the first time since pre-1980. The win was USF's 19th road win this season.

Sophomore left-hander Luke Sommer started for the Dons and retired the first 12 batters he faced in only his second appearance on the mound. Sommer threw 4+ innings allowing one earned run on one hit, one walk and struck out four Bears. Sophomore right-hander Brian Anderson (6-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 3.1 innings allowing three runs (none earned) on three hits, with one walk and a strikeout.

USF had 14 hits on the day. Sophomore third baseman Joey Railey added a single to his team leading hits total and now has 70 hits on the season. Senior Stefan Gartrell was1-for-5 with an RBI to increase his WCC leading RBI total to 57. Junior outfielder Scott Cousins and junior catcher Daniel Morales had two hits each, including a double. Sommer and sophomore first baseman Mitchell Bialosky added doubles as well. Junior Lucas DeLong was 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

USF fell behind 1-0 in the fifth before breaking open the game with a seven run sixth. Cal would score four more runs over the next four innings, but could not hold off the Dons who scored two insurance runs in the ninth to solidify the win.

USF returns to action Friday at Benedetti Diamond, hosting WCC rival Loyola Marymount. First pitch against the Lions is set for 3:00 PM.
