Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team secured its first .500 season since 1991 by sweeping a twin-bill from Patten University Tuesday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels took game one by the score of 7-1 and then captured the nightcap by the final of 11-1. After the two wins, SMC improves to 26-22 on the season.
The Gaels held onto a 3-1 lead until they erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. SMC started its scoring with one in the first and two more in the third.
SMC plated two more in the third when Staples smacked his own double to bring in freshman Cory Miller, who reached on a walk. Senior Sam Carter then knocked in his 50th RBI on the season on a fielder's choice that scored Staples.
After the Lions would tally one in the top of the sixth, the Gaels would add four more in the frame. Staples tallied an RBI the hard way by taking a pitch in the shoulder that scored senior Mike Harris.
Frederick then singled up the middle to bring in sophomore Ian Gordon and senior Preston Young supplied the big blow with a two-run single up the middle that plated Staples and his brother Ryan Young.
Offensively the Gaels were led by Staples and Young. The freshman batted 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs while the senior chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.
The Gaels banged out 10 hits and tallied 11 runs to earn the sweep. SMC tallied two or more runs in three frames, including a five spot in the fourth.
Saint Mary's began its scoring barrage with three to begin the game. Junior Eric Cattoni tallied the first run by crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Senior Jake Sanders then knocked in Staples and Frederick on a single through the left side.
After a Cattoni double that scored senior Adam Hicks in the second, the Gaels ripped off five runs in the fourth.
Senior Tyler Selden began the scoring with a hustle play. Selden ran from first to third on a wild pitch and then scored an errant throw. Frederick then plated Cattoni on a single and Young drove in two more with a single up the middle. Sanders then tallied his third RBI of the game with a fielder's choice that plated Young.
The Gaels capped off their big day with two more in the sixth. Sanders was not done as he accounted for both runs in the inning, finishing the day with a career high five RBIs.
Sanders led the Gaels with two hits while Frederick batted 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Young batted 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, May 12 against Pepperdine. The weekend West Coast Conference series will mark the last regular season games for the Gaels. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
