NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team's (30-21) late rally fell short in a 10-6 loss to Cal State Northridge (22-23) in a non-conference game at Matador Field Tuesday afternoon.
With USD trailing 10-3 heading into the ninth inning, USD put on a late rally scoring three runs on five hits. USD led off the inning with three straight hits to load the bases with no outs. After a Shane Buschini strikeout, Jose Valerio drove in the first run with a ground out to the third baseman. USD next two runs came on back-to-back singles by Justin Snyder and Steve Singleton, but could come no closer leaving the game at its final of 10-6.
The Matadors got on the scoreboard first as they scored one run on one hit in the second inning. CSUN's run came when USD starting pitcher Anthony Slama committed a balk with runners at the corners to give the Matadors an early 1-0 lead.
The Toreros responded in the top of the third inning scoring two runs on one hit. After Valerio led off the inning reaching on an error by the CSUN third baseman, Snyder drove him in with a run-scoring double to center field. Snyder advanced one base on a wild pitch and came home on Singleton's ground out to the second baseman to give USD a 2-1 lead.
The Matadors then retook the lead scoring four runs over the next two innings, before USD took back one run on a Abruzzo sacrifice fly to center field which scored Singleton, who had doubled, to cut the lead to two runs at 5-3.
CSUN would score one run in the sixth inning, and two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to round out the scoring for the day.
Offensively for the Toreros, Steve Singleton led the way going 3-for-4 with one double and two RBI.
Ricardo Pecina (4-4) is saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing three runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. Matt Gaylord (1-0) was credited with the win for the Matadors allowing one run on one hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they open a pivotal three-game West Coast Conference series against the Bulldogs of Gonzaga University with a 3 p.m. game at Cunningham Stadium.
