SAN DIEGO - Gonzaga University (28-23, 9-12 WCC) fell behind 10-0 after the first five innings on Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs dropped the final game of the West Coast Conference season at the University of San Diego (32-22, 13-8). San Diego won 14-4 but the Toreros were eliminated from the WCC playoff race by the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon when GU won its only game of the series.
Second baseman Keoni Ruth continued his hot hitting against the Bulldogs pitching staff as he connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to start the Toreros scoring. Senior Jay Bryner surrendered the blast falling to 0-2 on the season as he was lifted in the first inning. USD would tack on one more run on an RBI by Steve Buschini.
USD increased the lead to 5-0 in the third on a sacrifice fly and RBI double by Rob Lilly. Lilly would finish the day 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles. Lilly drove home two of San Diego's five runs in the fifth with his second double.
Gonzaga finally broke through against Matt Couch (7-3) in the top of the sixth as Darin Holcomb hit his seventh home run of the season. Holcomb led GU with three hits and increased his season RBI total to 56 which placed him in the single-season Top 10 for RBI.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the ninth with senior Zach Woodward driving home one of the runs with an RBI single to center. Scott Campbell had one hit for the Bulldogs to keep his season average at .384 with two regular-season games remaining.
GU will host Washington State on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. and then end the season on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. hosting Lewis-Clark State. The L-C State game was moved up one day to Thursday to accommodate the Warriors graduation.
