Pepperdine Concludes Regular-Season with 10-5 Victory Over UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, CA - Sophomore center fielder Adrian Ortiz collected three hits and sophomore right hander Barry Enright pitched 5.2 innings as No. 20 Pepperdine concluded its regular-season with a 10-5 victory over UC Santa Barbara Wednesday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

The Waves took advantage of 13 walks and two hit batsmen by Gauchos pitching to improve to 38-18 on the season and move to 20 games over .500 for the first time since the 2001 season.

The Waves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as they sent eight batters to the plate against UC Santa Barbara starter Bryan Fleming (2-6).

Sophomore center fielder Adrian Ortiz and shortstop Danny Worth hit back-to-back doubles to open the game for a 1-0 lead and senior first baseman Nick Kliebert drove in the inning's final run with a base hit up the middle.

After the Gauchos cut the lead in half with a run in the second, the Waves responded with three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. Designated hitter Mike Craig hit a two-run home run to left-center field in the third and junior left fielder Luke Salas broke the game open with a three-run triple to right-center field in the fourth inning.

Enright (12-1) pitched 8.2 innings, allowed eight hits, four runs, walked one and struck out two to improve to 22-2 in his career. He also moved into a tie for eighth place on the Pepperdine single-season wins list and currently tops the country in victories.

Pepperdine is idled until Friday, May 26 when it faces San Francisco in the opener of the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championship Series at Benedetti Diamond in San Francisco. The winner of the best-of-three series earns the conference's automatic berth to the 64-team NCAA Tournament that begins Friday, June 2 at selected sites.
