Portland, Ore. - Sophomore left-hander Robert Dickmann pitched six shutout innings and Donald Brown and Chase d'Arnaud had two-out run-scoring doubles to lead No. 25 Pepperdine to 3-0 victory over Portland Friday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field in the opener of a three-game West Coast Conference (WCC) series.
Junior right hander Adam Olbrychowski followed Dickmann with three shutout innings to record his first career save and help the Waves improve to 33-20 overall and 12-7 in WCC play. The Pilots fell to 21-28 on the season and 7-12 in conference action.
In his six innings of work, Dickmann (6-4) allowed three hits, walked two and struck out four. The sophomore left-hander's only difficulty came in the bottom of the fourth when he allowed a leadoff double, issued a walk and hit a batter to load the bases with no outs.
However, he worked out of the jam after getting a strikeout and an inning-ending double play.
The Waves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth against David Gruener (3-5) on a two-out single to right field by Ryan Heroy that scored Luke Salas, who singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on an infield out.
The score remained 1-0 until the seventh inning. With two outs, Danny Worth singled and scored on a double to left-center field by Brown. d'Arnaud doubled down the left field line to drive home Brown with the game's final run.
Worth and Brown led the Waves offense with three hits apiece, while Heroy and Adrian Ortiz contributed two hits apiece.
Pepperdine will continue its series with Portland on Saturday when the two teams meet at 1 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field.
