Late Rally Falls Short in NCAA Regional

June 2, 2006

FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team's (32-24) late rally fell short in a 9-8 loss to Fresno State University (44-16) Friday afternoon at Goodwin Field in the first game of the Fullerton NCAA Regional.

With the Toreros trailing 9-5 heading into the top of the ninth inning, USD dug in and began another late rally. Logan Gelbrich got things rolling with a single blooper to right field. Two batters later, Kevin Hansen hit a single down the right field line which moved Gelbrich to third. Justin Snyder then hit a single to right field which brought across the first run of the inning. Steve Singleton then brought in the second run with a double to left field which moved Snyder to third. David Harris then pinch hit for Daniel Magness and hit the ball to the second baseman. The Bulldogs' second baseman froze as Snyder came across for the third run, then tried to throw Harris out at first, but Harris slid head-first into the bag safely. After Jordan Abruzzo struck out swinging, Harris was picked off at first base to give FSU the win.

Fresno State broke into the scoring column first as they let the long ball fly scoring their first four runs on home runs off USD starting pitcher Josh Butler. Erik Wetzel got things started with a solo shot over the left field fence in the third inning. The Bulldogs then received a two-run homer from Nick Moresi in the fourth inning and capped the inning with a solo shot by Frank LoNigro to push the score to 4-0.

The Toreros answered back in the fifth inning putting up five runs. Gelbrich led off with a single up the middle. Josh Romanski then got the scoring going as he hit his third home run of the season, a two-run blast over the right center field fence to cut the lead in half. Kevin Hansen kept things rolling with a single through the right side and moved to second on Snyder's groundout to the second baseman. USD would then load the bases after Singleton was hit by a pitch and Keoni Ruth hit an infield single on a high chopper to the second baseman. Abruzzo knotted the score at 4-4 with a two-run single to left center field which allowed Ruth to move to third. USD would take the lead on Ryan Lilly's sacrifice fly to center field to put the score at 5-4.

The Bulldogs were able to knot the score at 5-5 on Sakamoto's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and would regain a 4-run lead in the seventh inning scoring one run on a Sakamoto RBI single and a three-run homer from Moresi to move the score to 9-4.

Gelbrich was the offensive leader for the Toreros as he went 3-for-4 and Singleton also had a good day at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Matt Couch (7-4) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros allowing five runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of work. Fresno State starting pitcher Eddie Romero (13-2) was credited with the win allowing five runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the loser of the Cal State Fullerton and Saint Louis University game played later tonight at Goodwin Field.
