Pepperdine And San Diego Fall In Regional Finals

STANFORD, Calif. - The #19 Pepperdine baseball team had its season ended on Monday afternoon after falling 9-7 to Stanford at the NCAA Regionals at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

Pepperdine ends its season with a 38-21 record. The Waves finished second in the WCC with a 14-6 record and Pepperdine recorded its 31st consecutive 30-win campaign. Stanford advances to the Super Regionals with the win.

Pepperdine got off to a fast start, as Matt Aidem (Valencia, Calif./UC Santa Barbara/Valencia HS) notched an RBI double in the first and Chase d'Arnaud (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) launched a three-run homer to give the Waves a 4-0 lead.

Stanford got on the board in the third with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 contest, but Pepperdine responded with a run of its own on a Nate Simon (Duvall, Wash./Tulane) RBI double to put the Waves ahead 5-1.

Stanford pushed another run across in the fourth on a solo homer from Sean Ratliff, but Pepperdine again responded in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly from David Harris (Glendora, Calif./Santa Barbara CC) to push the Pepperdine lead to 6-2.

Stanford changed the momentum of the game in the fifth inning, as Jason Castro notched a two-run double and Ratliff hit a grand slam to put the Cardinal up 8-6.

Pepperdine cut into its deficit in the seventh inning on d'Arnaud's second homer of the day, a solo shot, which made the score 8-7.

Stanford got the run back in the eighth on an RBI single to make the score 9-7, and Pepperdine was unable to mount any offense in its last two innings, sealing Stanford's 9-7 win.

Stanford reliever Drew Storen earned the win, while Pepperdine's Tyler Hess (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle HS) took the loss. Waves' starter Robert Dickmann (Woodland Hills, Calif./UCLA/Notre Dame HS) took a no-decision after allowing three runs over four innings of work.

d'Arnaud led the Waves offense with a 3-for-3 effort with two home runs and four RBI, while Bryce Mendonca (San Leandro, Calif./Chabot JC) and Donald Brown (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) each notched two hits. d'Arnaud and Ryan Heroy (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley HS) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Brown. Aidem, Nick Gaudi (Lancaster, Calif./Paraclete HS and Doug Konoske (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) are the four seniors who will be lost to graduation for Pepperdine.

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team saw their season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to Fresno State University Monday evening in the championship game of the Long Beach Regional.

With the loss, the Toreros conclude the season with a program-best 44-17 overall record. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 40-28 and have advanced to the Super Regional in Tempe, Ariz. to face Arizona State University.

San Diego broke into the scoring column first as they pushed across one run on two hits in the top of the fifth inning. Logan Gelbrich led off the inning with a double to centerfield and moved to third on a Kevin Muno fly out to right field. After a Josh Romanski walk, Sean Nicol hit the ball right back to the pitcher, it hit off the pitchers leg, which allowed Gelbrich to come across for the 1-0 USD lead.

Fresno State then responded in their half of the fifth inning as they took the lead on a two-run run single by Gavin Hedstrom, moving the score to 2-1.

The Bulldogs then put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth inning as they scored three runs on three hits to put the game at its final of 5-1.

Freshman left-hander Sammy Solis was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed two runs on four hits in 5.1 innings of work. Holten Sprague was credited with the win for the Bulldogs as he allowed one run on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Offensively for the Toreros, Ryan Davis led the way as he went 2-for-4 as the only Torero to record multiple hits.
