Late Rally Falls Short, Toreros End Season With 9-8 Loss

FULLERTON, Calif. - University of San Diego baseball team's late rally fell short in a 9-8 loss to the Fresno State University Bulldogs (45-17) Sunday evening at Goodwin Field in the Fullerton NCAA Regional

With the loss, the Toreros finish the season with s 33-25 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the Fullerton NCAA Regional. Fresno State will advance on to play the host Titans of Cal State Fullerton in an elimination game for FSU.

With USD trailing 9-8 heading in to the bottom of the ninth inning, the Toreros looked to record another magical comeback as David Harris led off with a double to right field. Kevin Hansen then laid a bunt down the third base line which the FSU pitcher picked up and threw Harris out at third allowing Hansen to safely reach first. The Toreros then put two runners on when Josh Romanski walked, but USD could not push across another run to leave the game at its final of 9-8.

USD jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Josh Romanski got things going with a stand-up double down the right field line. After Steve Singleton flew out to left field, the Bulldogs intentionally walked Jordan Abruzzo. Daniel Magness made the Bulldogs pay for that decision as he hit an RBI single to center field which brought Romanski home for the first run of the game.

Fresno State answered back in the third inning as they scored four unearned runs. The Bulldogs' runs came on a run-scoring double by Ozzie Lewis and a three-run home run by Kent Sakamoto to give FSU a 4-1 advantage.

USD took back one run in the fourth inning on an Abruzzo RBI single through the right side to pull USD within two at 4-2.

Fresno State then exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead. FSU's runs came by way of a three-run home runs by Sakamoto, a RBI single by Steve Sunsdorf and a RBI single by Loren Storey.

The Toreros were able to take back two runs in the fifth inning. Romanski led off with a walk and moved to third on Singleton's double to right field. Abruzzo brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field and the Toreros second run came across when the FSU starting pitcher committed a balk.

USD continued to chip away at the lead as they scored two more runs in the sixth inning. USD's runs came on a Kevin Hansen run-scoring double and a Romanski RBI single through the right side to pull USD to within three.

The Toreros took back another run in the seventh inning on a Hansen suicide squeeze bunt to get USD to within two and Daniel Mmagness hit a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to give USD a one run deficit heading into the ninth inning.

Offensively for the Toreros, Romanski led the way as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and one double. Daniel Magness also had a solid day at the plate for USD as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one double.

Matt Couch was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed nine runs, five earned, on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work. FSU starting pitcher Andy Underwood (12-3) was credited with the win for the Bulldogs as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings of work.
