Southern California continues to be the hotbed for college baseball, with programs from San Luis Opispo to San Diego regularly peppering the professional game with former players. Some of those players include Hall of Famers: Jackie Robinson (UCLA), Ozzie Smith (Cal Poly) and Tom Seaver (USC). Two more are on the ballot for the first time this season, USC's Mark McGwire and San Diego State's Tony Gwynn. In all, more than 150 players from Southern California schools can be found on the professional baseball circuit.
In the collegiate setting, area teams have made 44 College World Series apperances (USC-21, Cal State Fullerton-14, Long Beach State-4, Pepperdine-2, UCLA-2, Loyola Marymount-1) and won 21 national championships (USC-12, Cal State Fullerton-4, Pepperdine-1, UC Riverside-2 at D-II, CS Northridge-2 at D-II).
Head coaches and players from Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, the University of San Diego, San Diego State and Pacific will be on hand to field questions from members of the media in a separate event from the televised/online conference that CSTV will carry. Three of the head coaches, Gwynn, USC's Chad Krueter and Pacific's Ed Sprague, are former Major Leaguers.
That question and answer session will be followed by a catered luncheon. Media are asked to RSVP to Niall Adler at Long Beach State, firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a spot.
