SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz has been named the National Pitcher of the Week by Collegiate Baseball. This is the first time Matusz has been named the national Pitcher of the Week.
Matusz continued his impressive start to the season on Friday. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits, while tying a career-high 13 strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work as USD's starter in a no decision. Matusz now has 34 strikeouts on the season. The 13 strikeouts ties him for second in single-game strikeouts at USD, and places him just one shy of the school record of 14 held by Mike Saipe.
Matusz and the 18th-ranked Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they begin a four-game series with Virginia Commonwealth University at 2 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Cunningham Stadium.
