SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The University of San Diego junior right-hander Josh Butler was named the West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Month, it was announced Friday.
Butler, a junior from Danville, Calif., has posted a 0.35 ERA through the first month of play, only surrendering one run in 26 innings of work. Butler began his month with a win against the defending national champion Texas Longhorns allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out five batters in five innings of work. Butler then didn't surrender a run, earned or unearned, to cross the plate for the next 21 innings of work posting wins over Vanderbilt and UC Davis. Butler has posted a 3-1 record over the month of February with 22 strikeouts, good for second on the team.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they look to end a five-game losing against No. 30 Cal Poly. Friday's game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start with Butler getting the nod for the start.
