SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The University of San Diego sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz has been named the West Coast Conference Co-Pitcher of the Month for February.
Matusz has led San Diego to a fast start to the 2007 season, turning in dominating performances as USD's Friday starter. The southpaw posted a perfect 3-0 record during the month of February, with a 1.71 ERA. The sophomore led the nation in strikeouts during the month, fanning 54 batters and earning Collegiate Baseball National Pitcher of the Week honors twice, the WCC Pitcher of the Week award once as well as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week award once during February. Matusz struck out 13 batters in two different outings, tying him for second place on the San Diego single-game list, and recorded double-digit strikeouts in four-of-five starts. He helped guide USD to a No. 16 national ranking during the month, and an 11-6 start to the season.
Matusz and the 16th-ranked Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they head to Irvine for a 6 p.m. non-conference game with the UC Irvine Anteaters.
