FRESNO, Calif. --- The reigning national champion and 24th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs topped the Portland Pilots 7-0 on the opening day of the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic at Baiden Field on Monday night. The Bulldogs outhit the Pilots 12-3 on the night.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Portland, which drops to 8-5 on the season. Fresno State improves to 6-4.
The Bulldogs scored once in the bottom of the first inning, two in the third, one in the seventh and three more in the eighth en route to the win. Alan Ahmady and Tom Mendonca both had two hits and an RBI for the Bulldogs. Isaac Vivas knocked in a pair.
FSU starter Josh Poytress (1-0) went 5.0 innings, surrendering just two hits while striking out four. He walked two. Two relievers followed Poytress and were just as effective against the UP line-up.
Mark Triolo (2-2) is saddled with the loss for Portland. The senior right-hander struck out seven in 5.1 innings, but did give up three runs on seven hits and four walks. Reliever Keeler Brynteson gave up a run, while Ben Panther allowed three. Ben Pressler didn't allow a run in an inning pitched.
Freshman SS Kris Kauppila, freshman DH Beau Fraser and senior 1B Cort Carpenter accounted for Portland's three hits.
Mendonca got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first. In the third, Gavin Hedstrom scored on a wild pitch and Steve Detwiler knocked in a run to give FSU the 3-0 lead.
FSU took advantage of another UP wild pitch in the seventh that allowed Danny Muno to score. An inning later, Vivas brought home two runs on a double and Ahmady made it a 7-0 game with a run-scoring single.
Portland continues play at the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic tomorrow with a game against Buffalo at 2:00 p.m. The Pilots are set to play six games in six days while in Fresno.
