LOS ANGELES - After taking home the third straight WCC Player of the Week selection for LMU on Monday, junior Alex Guthrie was named CollegeBaseballInsider.com's West Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Guthrie hit .529 over the week, finishing 9-for-17 with four doubles, four runs scored and eight RBI. The native of Sunnyvale, Calif. slugged .765 and reached at a .529 clip. Guthrie hit safely in each of the four games, extending his hitting streak to eight straight games. LMU's third baseman in every game so far this year collected multiple hits in each of the final three games against the Mustangs, including a career-high tying three hits on Saturday in game one, and three more in the series finale. Guthrie posted a pair of doubles in both of the final games, including notching a career-high five RBI on Sunday. The five RBI are the most for a Lion player since Ryan Hawthorne had five at Portland on April 18, 2010.
LMU went 2-2 last week after splitting a four-game series on the road at Cal Poly. The Lions dropped a one-run game on Friday as the Mustangs walked-off with a 2-1 victory on an unearned run in the ninth. LMU rebounded to split a doubleheader on Saturday, earning a 7-6 victory in game one before dropping a 7-5 decision in game two. Needing a victory to earn a series split, LMU defeated Cal Poly by a count of 11-5 on Sunday.
After blanking San Diego State on Tuesday to improve to 12-6 this year, LMU will hit the road to open a three-game series with UC Irvine on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
