Baseball Moves up In National Polls

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team has jumped up six spots in the latest Collegiate Baseball Top-30 poll to No. 18 after posting a 3-1 record this past week. USD is also up two spots in the latest Baseball America Top-25 poll to No. 19 and is up to No. 22 in the latest Rivals.com top-25 poll.

The Toreros dropped a heartbreaker to UC Riverside on Tuesday, then bounced back with a three-game sweep over the University of Portland this past weekend. In Fridays 15-1 rout over the Pilots, sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz turned in a dominating performance as he struck out 13 batters, allowed one unearned run and gave up just four hits. Offensively for the Toreros, Jordan Abruzzo led the way with his 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI performance. On Saturday, USD received another dominating pitching performance from Josh Romanski as he allowed one run on two hits, while striking out five in 8.0 innings of work. Offensively for the Toreros, Justin Snyder led the way with his 2-for-3 one double and three RBI performance. Shane Buschini went 2-for-3 with two RBI and the final USD player to record multiple hits was Logan Gelbrich, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI. USD then capped off a perfect weekend with a 10-2 win over the Pilots. Buschini exploded for a two home run, five RBI performance at the plate. Abruzzo went a perfect 5-for-5 with on RBI to help lead USD to its second consecutive three-game West Coast Conference series sweep.

The 18th-ranked Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they travel across the city to battle with cross-town rival San Diego State University at 6 p.m.
