Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team (18-16, 5-4 WCC) will take on Bethany College today in a doubleheader from Louis Guisto Field. The first game is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by the nightcap scheduled for 4 p.m. The twin-bill against Bethany is the final home appearance for Saint Mary's this week. The Gaels will travel to Portland this weekend for a West Coast Conference series.
The Gaels are coming off a series victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs. SMC took game one by the score of 8-4 and captured the series with a 4-2 victory in game two. Freshman Joel Staples was on fire this past weekend, batting .500 (6-for-12) in the three games. Staples smacked his second career home run and drove in a team-high six runs on the weekend.
Saint Mary's is currently 13-5 at Louis Guisto Field and the 13 wins this season is the best total achieved by the Gaels since the 2002 season when they won 15. With two more wins the Gaels will have reached 20 victories for the second consecutive season under head coach Jedd Soto.
The Gaels will continue WCC play this weekend when they head to the Pacific Northwest to face the Portland Pilots. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday, April 21 with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. from Merlo Field.
