SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore third baseman Kris Bryant of the 16th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team has been named to the 2012 USA Baseball National Team.
"Kris is one of the elite position players in college baseball," stated head coach Rich Hill. "You just don't see guys like Kris too often in college baseball. His combination of speed, power, and actions on the defensive side is just off the charts."
Bryant, the reigning WCC Co-Player and Co-Freshman of the Year, is currently leading the Toreros offense with a .378 batting average, to go along with 56 hits, 13 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and a team-best 44 RBI. Bryant is also bolstering an on base percentage of .492, while slugging at a .696 clip. Bryant has been named WCC Player of the Week twice this season, and has been a huge reason the Toreros are off to their best start in program history through 40 games at 31-9.
As a freshman, Bryant started all 21 games during conference play for the Toreros, while leading the WCC with a .410 batting average, .525 on-base percentage, 26 runs scored, and 11 doubles en route to the WCC Co-Player and Co-Freshman of the Year distinction. For the season, Bryant led the WCC with a .365 batting average, and his nine overall home runs were tied for most in the conference. Bryant posted a career-high and team-best 15-game hitting streak this past season from April 8-May 1, and the power hitting third baseman finished the season on a 11-game hitting streak. Bryant had several memorable games this season including a 2-for-5, one home run and five RBI performance at Gonzaga on April 10, with the freshman slugger hitting his first collegiate grand slam in the top of the ninth inning. Bryant also had 22 multi hit games, and two multi home-run games. Overall, Bryant was second on the team in stolen bases with 18, he slugged at a .599 clip and he bolstered an on base percentage of .482.
Bryant and the Toreros return to action this afternoon, as they host UC Riverside in a 3 p.m. non-conference game at USD's Cunningham Stadium.
