Baseball Heads Into Santa Clara In First Place

April 27, 2006

Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team heads into Santa Clara in first place in the West Coast Conference with an 8-4 record. The Gaels hold a one game lead over Pepperdine, San Diego, San Francisco and Gonzaga. SMC moved atop the conference with a three-game sweep over Portland last weekend from the Pacific Northwest.

Nine conference games remain with six of them coming from the friendly confines of Louis Guisto Field where the Gaels are a staggering 15-5. SMC took care of its lone conference series at home thus far by defeating second place Gonzaga in two of the three games.

Saint Mary's has never possessed a WCC lead this late in the season. The last time the Gaels were in first place in conference was after the opening series in 1999 when they swept Portland.

A Look Ahead: After the series at Santa Clara, the Gaels will host San Francisco and Pepperdine. A lot can shake out this weekend with some key match-ups in the conference.

Before heading into Moraga, the Dons will host the San Diego Toreros on the hilltop. Both teams sit in a second place gridlock with a 7-5 record. Pepperdine will host Portland in Malibu before heading up to Spokane to play Gonzaga.

Gonzaga will head to Los Angeles this weekend to play the Loyola Marymount Lions before hosting Pepperdine. The Zags close out their conference slate with a road series against San Diego.

The Toreros travel to San Francisco and then host Santa Clara before heading up to Spokane to close out their conference slate.

The Gaels will begin their three-game weekend series against WCC rival Santa Clara on Friday, April 28 with first pitch coming at 7 p.m. from Stephen Schott Stadium.
