LMU's Florer and Portland's Melby Earn Weekly Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference has named its Rawlings Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 28, 2013.

RAWLINGS WEST COAST CONFERENCE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Matt Florer, SR., LHP, Loyola Marymount
Loyola Marymount senior Matt Florer is the Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week. LMU went 1-3 last week, but the win came in historic fashion as senior Matt Florer tossed the second no-hitter in LMU program history on Tuesday against Cal State Northridge as LMU defeated the Matadors by a score of 5-0 at LMU's Page Stadium. The no-hitter came in Florer's ninth career start and his 14th appearance of the year (third start). The last LMU no-hitter was tossed by Bob Seus on March 14, 1980 vs. Long Beach State. Florer walked five, hit one batter and struck out a career-best five batters over 134 pitches. The left-hander improved to 2-1 with the victory.

RAWLINGS WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jeff Melby, SR., 3B, Portland
Senior Jeff Melby is the Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Week. Melby hit .562 (9-for-16) during the week as the Pilots went 3-1, which included winning their WCC series against the LMU Lions. He had two three-hit games, four RBI's, three runs scored and three doubles. He also had seven four assists and three put-outs on defense.Against No. 13 Oregon on Tuesday, Melby was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. He was 3-for-5 again on Friday with a double, an RBI and a run as the Pilots opened the LMU series with an 8-3 win. He knocked in two runs during Saturday's 3-2 win, which included another double, and he registered his third double of the week on Sunday as the Pilots finished off the sweep with a 2-1 win.Melby is now second in the WCC with a .357 batting average and he's reached base safely in 23 straight games. He also has at least one hit in 22 of his last 23 games.
