San Diego visits BYU for key weekend series

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The final month of the 2012 regular season has arrived, and the race for the West Coast Conference title is up-for-grabs. San Diego enters the month in first place, but several WCC teams are hot on the Toreros' heels. This weekend, San Diego visits BYU. All three games will be televised live on BYUtv.


  • Three West Coast Conference teams rank in the top 30 in RPI according to this week's report on NCAA.com: San Diego (26), Pepperdine (27), and Gonzaga (30). The WCC ranks sixth in conference RPI according to boydsworld.com.

  • Two WCC teams rank in the top ten nationally in earned run average. Portland is second nationally as of April 30 with a 3.58 team ERA. Gonzaga ranks eighth with a 2.78 mark.

  • Gonzaga sophomore LHP Marco Gonzales is the Rawlings West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week. Gonzales sturck out 15 and didn't walk a batter over 11 innings as the Bulldogs eventually topped LMU on national TV.

  • Saint Mary's junior OF Brenden Kalfus is the Rawlings WCC Player of the Week. Kalfus hit .667 (10-16) last week, leading the Gaels to a 3-1 record.

  • San Diego closer Michael Wagner leads the nation with 19 saves. Portland's Owen Jones ranks third with 14 saves.
