Baseball Class of 2007 Update

Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's head baseball coach Jedd Soto has put together a stellar recruiting class for the 2007 season. The class is the largest brought to Moraga during the Soto era with numerous players being ranked among the top in the nation. Here is a look at what these future Gaels are doing on the diamond for their respective teams.

Anthony Aliotti - LHP/1B - (De La Salle HS) Aliotti has been the anchor for Spartans head coach Eric Borba's pitching staff. On the hill, Aliotti leads the team with a 0.44 ERA and has posted two saves and 16 strikeouts in 14 innings. In the box, Aliotti is batting .462 with one home run and 22 RBIs in 17 games played.

Brandon Berl - RHP - (Woodcrest Christian HS) Berl has been absolutely dominant on the mound for Woodcrest Christian this season. The flamethrower is currently 8-1 with an alarming 0.49 ERA. Berl has fanned 95 batters in 57 innings and only walked 16. Berl has been ranked as low as fifth in the state of California in ERA and seventh in strikeouts.

Kevin Brandt - IF - (Wilcox HS) Brandt has been swinging a hot bat for Wilcox, leading his team through a tough preseason schedule. In his junior season, Brandt hit .380 with a team-leading five home runs and 40 RBIs. The Santa Clara native was named to the SCVAL First-Team and garnered Second-Team All-CCS.

Zach Buchta - RHP - (San Ramon Valley HS) Buchta has been solid on the mound for San Ramon Valley all season. Buchta was named to the East Bay Spring Classic All-Tournament team last spring for his performance on the hill. The righthander from Alamo played on the Reds Scout team and will earn his third letter in the spring.

Michael Cipolla - IF - (De La Salle HS) Cipolla has been getting the job done at the plate and in the field for the Spartans this spring. Cipolla is currently batting .382 with four doubles and 16 RBIs. Cipolla also sports a .486 on-base-percentage and has scored 16 runs. In the field, Cipolla has only committed two errors.

Sean Gleason - RHP - (Lamar Community College) Gleason has established himself as one of the top JUCO hurlers in the nation. Gleason is 10-1 with a 3.10 ERA and has struck out 97 batters in 75 innings pitched. Gleason has also compiled three shutouts and five complete games. He currently ranks second all-time at Lamar CC in career wins with 18 and strikeouts with 174.

Mike Gonzales - RHP/1B - (Liberty HS) Gonzales has been an imposing force on the mound and in the box for Liberty this season. Gonzales is currently batting .333 with one home run and four RBIs in 12 games played. On the mound, he currently sits at a 2.77 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 30.1 innings. In his junior season he led the Northern California Section with a .453 batting average and 19 RBI. Gonzales slugged five doubles and two home runs and compiled a .557 on-base-percentage along with a .625 slugging percentage. On the mound the righty posted a 2.37 ERA and 40 Ks in 38 IP.

Matt McCormick - LHP - (Cupertino HS) McCormick will bring a much needed potent left-handed arm to the Gaels pitching staff. McCormick has been pitching well for Cupertino this season. Coached by Dave Kawamoto, McCormick grabbed the attention of the SMC coaches at the SMC Junior Day Showcase this past summer.

Jimmy Munill - RHP/IF - (Oakmont HS) Munill has been pitching well for Oakmont this season. He is currently 4-3 with a 2.42 ERA, adding 57 strikeouts in 46.1 innings. Munill has also tossed a complete game shutout and only walked seven batters. At the plate, the Roseville native batted .380 with two home runs and 19 RBI in 2005. In 29 games he scored 20 runs and collected six doubles. His 10 wins was the second best mark in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Section and his 82 Ks ranked him 19th overall.

Taylor Stanton - RHP - (Deer Valley HS) Stanton has been solid on the hill and in the box. On the mound, Stanton is 6-1 with a 1.56 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 31.1 innings. At bat, he is currently batting .396 with five doubles and 10 RBIs. Stanton is ranked #370 out of 400 by Baseball America as one of the top players in the nation. Last season, the righthander compiled a 1.29 ERA and averaged 9.37 strikeouts per outing. At the plate, Stanton hit .330 with one home run and 26 RBI.

Garrett Silva - 3B/C - (Reed HS) Silva is off to a hot start for Reed HS posting a .429 batting average with three home runs and 19 RBIs. He has also chipped in six doubles and sports an alarming 1.008 slugging percentage through 11 games. Silva, who attends Coach Soto's alma mater Reed HS, has earned the distinction of being one of the top catchers in the state of Nevada. Silva is another signee that shined at the SMC Junior Day this past summer.

Randy Wells - SS - (Clayton Valley HS) Wells is one of the top players in the nation and is backing up that distinction with his stellar play this season. In 16 games, Wells is batting .527 with two home runs and 10 RBIs. Wells has added three doubles and a double and is slugging .727. Wells is ranked #150 of 400 by Baseball America and #90 of 100 by Team One Baseball. Wells is also ranked fifth in Northern California and 24th in the State by Perfect Game Baseball.
