WCC PodCentral: Inside the WCC sat down with this week's WCC/Rawlings Pitcher and Players of the Week, Angelo Songco from Loyola Marymount University and Matt Fields and Ryan Wiegand from Gonzaga University.
Songco, a junior outfielder, had a huge week, helping his team go 4-0 and earning a share of first place in the conference standings. He went 7-for-12 (.583) with five runs scored, a double, a triple, a home run, and four RBI. He also slugged 1.111 and had an on base percentage of .692. Songco talked about earning his second Player of the Week award this season, the impact of Lions' first-year Head Coach Jason Gill, and playing for a chance at the WCC Championship Series.
Fields, a senior right handed pitcher, earned his second weekly honor of the season by tossing in his first career complete game that was also a shutout. He allowed just five hits while striking out eight and improved to 4-0 in conference play. The Everett, WA native talked about how the Zags' pitching staff has been able to maintain their success, the Zags' offense, and preparing for their big showdown with LMU next weekend.
Wiegand, a senior first baseman, collected his second straight weekly award, helping his team remain in a share for first place. He went 7-for-13 (.538) with three doubles and six RBI. He had multiple hits and RBI in all three games against Saint Mary's. The San Diego, CA native talked about becoming the Gonzaga all-time hits leader, the season-long performance of the Zags' pitching staff, and the possibility of closing out his collegiate career with a WCC Championship.
