USF senior outfielder Stefan Gartrell led the Dons to a 4-0 week with a crucial road WCC sweep at Saint Mary's, vaulting the Dons into a share of the league lead with three games remaining and earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors in the process. The San Francisco native hit .500 (8-16) with a double, two home runs and seven RBI to go along with four runs and three walks (one intentional).
Gartrell saved his home runs for the Gaels, tying the opening game of the series at 3-3 to lead off the seventh and then drove in the winning run the following inning on a single. After collecting a pair of hits, including an RBI double in game two, Gartrell continued to shine in the finale leading the Dons to their first WCC sweep of the season. Gartrell broke a 4-4 tie with his second solo shot of the series in the sixth and then added an important insurance run in the eighth on an RBGI single.
With his seven RBI week, Gartrell now has 56 in 51 games and moved into sole possession of third place on the Dons career RBI list (125) and currently ranks sixth on the USF single season list with five games remaining in the 2006 regular season. Gartrell drove in just three runs as a freshman in limited action.
