Baseball Cracks Into Top-5

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team climbed up one spot in the latest Baseball America top-25 poll to a new program-record of No. 5. The Toreros are also up one spot in the latest Rivals.com top-25 poll to No. 6 and up to No. 6 in the latest Collegiate baseball top-30 poll.

The Toreros closed out the regular-season in stylish fashion, as they posted a 3-1 record this past week. USD downed No. 13 UC Irvine, then took two of three against Santa Clara to claim the regular-season West Coast Conference Championship and produce the program's first 40-win season as the finish the regular-season with a 41-15 overall record. The Toreros have also earned the right to host the WCC Championship series for the first time in program history.

On Tuesday, the Toreros went to battle with No. 13 UC Irvine and picked up a 4-1 win. In the game, Jordan Abruzzo and Logan Gelbrich both recorded multiple hits on the day with Abruzzo going 2-for-4 with one RBI and Gelbrich going 2-for-3. Shane Buschini was a huge help as well as he rocketed his 13th home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right field fence, which gave USD back the momentum.

On Friday, the Toreros clinched the WCC Championship with a 3-1 win behind the solid pitching of Brian Matusz. The sophomore finished the game allowing one run on five hits, while striking out 11 batters. With the 11 strikeouts, Matusz has become the new single-season leader at USD for strikeouts with 152. Offensively for the Toreros, Kevin Hansen led the way as he went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Four other Toreros recorded one hit to round off the five team hits in the game.

On Saturday, San Diego outlasted the Broncos with an 8-7 10-inning game. With the game knotted at 7-7, Hansen pushed across the winning run on a RBI single to centerfield. Freshman hurler AJ Griffin picked up his 10th save of the season to move into sole possession of second in single-season saves at USD. Griffin allowed no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work.

The Toreros then saw their 12-game winning streak and 17-game WCC winning streak come to an end on Sunday with a 6-5 loss to SCU. In the game, Daniel Magness, Josh Romanski, Sean Nicol and Hansen all recorded multiple hits on the day, with Romanski recording one home run and Nicol had a triple and two RBI.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday May 25th as then begin play in the WCC Championship series against Gonzaga University. The series will be held at USD and Friday's game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
