Baseball Holds Steady at No. 5

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team held steady in the latest top-25 polls after sitting idle for this past week. USD is ranked as high as No. 5 in the latest Baseball America top-25 poll, and is ranked No. 6 in both the Collegiate Baseball and Rivals.com polls.

The Toreros are gearing up for the West Coast Conference championship series this weekend to be held at USD's Cunningham Stadium against WCC runner-up Gonzaga University. This will be a best of three games and the winner will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals, which begin on June 1.

The Toreros enter the series as the regular-season WCC Champion and have a program-best 41-15 overall record. USD finished the conference season winning 17 of their last 18 games, including a program-best five consecutive series sweeps and six consecutive WCC series wins to close out season. USD is led offensively by senior right fielder Shane Buschini, who has a team-best .352 batting average, has 74 hits, 18 doubles, a team-leading 13 homeruns and has 55 RBI. On the mound, USD looks to sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz to anchor down the rotation as he has an overall record of 10-2 and an ERA of 2.43.

Gonzaga enters the championship series with a 32-23 overall record after picking up a series win over Pepperdine and dropping their regular-season finale to Washington. The Zags are one of two teams two defeat the Toreros in conference action, and the lone team in the WCC to win a series against the Toreros. The Bulldogs are led offensively by junior third baseman Darrin Holcomb, who has a team-leading .365 batting average, has 81 hits, 14 doubles, six home runs and 39 RBI. On the mound, Gonzaga looks to Clayton Mortenson to anchor things down. Mortenson has a team-leading 4.00 ERA with an overall record of 8-2.

Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., Saturday's game will begin at 2 p.m. and if necessary Sunday's game will begin at 3 p.m.
