SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz has been named one of three finalists for the for the InsidePitching.com West Regional Pitcher of the Year. Preston Guilmet from the University of Arizona and James Simmons of UC Riverside are the other two nominees
Matusz hails from Cave Creek, AZ and opposing hitters have found themselves up the river against the sophomore southpaw. The Toreros have watched Matusz strike out 152 batters in 111 innings en route to a 10-2 record and a team-leading 2.43 ERA. The 152 strikeouts breaks a 39-year old single-season strikeouts record (148) at USD that was held by Steve Davis, set in the 1968 season. Matusz has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in nine games this season and tied a career-high 13 on three different occasions. The 13 strikeouts is tied for second in single-game strikeouts at USD with Glenn Godwin.
Matusz and the No. 5 ranked Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host the West Coast Conference Championship Series against Gonzaga University. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
