SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team opened up NCAA Regional play with a 3-2 victory over Arizona State on Friday, behind dominant pitching and a big day at the plate from Austin Davidson.

Corey Miller gave up three hits and two runs in 7.1 innings of work to pick up the win and Davidson helped account for all three Wave runs, driving in two and scoring another. Pepperdine (40-16) stays in the winner’s bracket with the victory and will face the winner of tonight’s game between Cal Poly and Sacramento State tomorrow at 6 p.m.

The Waves scored all three of their runs in the first two innings, getting a jumpstart from Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) as he singled down the right-field line and then moved all the way to third on a wild pitch. Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) grounded to the right side and then beat out the double play attempt by ASU to allow Davidson to score two batters later. The Sun Devil’s starter, Brett Lilek, had to leave the game on the play after falling as he covered first base.

With ASU’s mid-week starter Seth Martinez in the game, Davidson came back up with the bases loaded in the second inning, doubling off the wall to right to bring home two more runs and give Pepperdine a 3-0 advantage.

Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) gave up one of his two runs in the bottom of the second, when Trever Allen hit a solo-shot to left. ASU would again score in the fourth on a single up the middle from Nathaniel Causey, but that was it for the Sun Devils. The Waves’ senior righty struck out four batters in the game to move to 9-4 on the year.

Miller gave way to Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) with two runners on and one out in the eighth. Blanchard came in and induced a popup and then struck out ASU’s Jake Peevyhouse looking to end the threat and preserve the one run lead. From there it was Eric Karch’s (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) turn to close it out and the senior did not disappoint, striking out two batters to finish off the game and record his 14 th save of the year.

On the other side of the ball, Martinez came in to battle Miller through 6.1 innings after Lilek’s exit, retiring 18 straight batters at one point to keep the Sun Devils close. He struck out seven batters and gave up three hits in the relief outing. Jordan Aboites threw the final 2.0 innings for ASU, allowing just one hit.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) scored one run and joined Davidson, going 2-for-4 at the plate on the day. Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) scored the other run for the Waves. ASU’s Allen was the only other player to record multiple hits in the game, also going 2-for-4.

The victory gives the Waves the 14 th 40-win season in program history. It is also the team’s first NCAA Regional win since 2012. Tomorrow night’s game will once again be shown live on ESPN3, with the winner earning a spot in the regional championship game on Sunday at 6 p.m. Keep up with the entire NCAA postseason bracket here .
