SAN DIEGO, Calif. - InsidePitching.com has announced its first annual region pitcher of the year awards and the University of San Diego's sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz was named the West Region Pitcher of the Year.
Matusz won comfortably over the University of Arizona's Preston Guilmet and UC Riverside's right hander James Simmons. Matusz, a native of Cave Creek, Ariz., became the new single-season leader in strikeouts with 156 after posting 11 strikeouts in picking up his 10th win of the season against Santa Clara University. On the season, Matusz is 10-3 with a 2.73 ERA.
Winners were chosen by a combination of three voting groups. Points were awarded for first, second and third place via insidepitching.com senior staff, contributing writing staff, and an online vote. Voting was not cumulative; rather, nominees were awarded points for each voting group. Regardless of how many votes a nominee received from a particular voting panel, they were only awarded a certain amount of points for finishing in first, second or third.
Matusz and the No.8 national seeded Toreros will open play in the NCAA Regional this evening with a 8 p.m. game against Fresno State University at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
