June 6, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego's sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz has been named second-team All-American by Rivals.com. This is Matusz's second All-American distinction this season, having previously being tabbed a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

Matusz, a Team USD member and quarterfinalist for the Wallace Award, finished the season with an overall record of 10-3 and an ERA of 2.85. Matusz set a new single-season strikeout record of 163. The Cave Creek, Ariz., native also placed himself second in single-game strikeouts with a career-high 13, a feet he has achieved three times this past season. Matusz is also a member of Team USA and was an All-WCC first-team honoree.

Matusz has one complete game on the season, a two-run seven hit gem he tossed against Saint Mary's. In that game, Matusz registered 10 strikeouts, one of nine games this season he recorded double-digit strikeouts. In his second outing of the season, Matusz helped lead USD to its fourth consecutive win over the Texas Longhorns as he allowed one run on five hits, while striking out eight in 5.2 innings of work.
