Joel Fountain Drafted By Florida Marlins

June 7, 2006

Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's senior pitcher Joel Fountain (Reno, NV) was selected by the Florida Marlins in 25th round with 755th pick. Fountain will join teammate Corey Madden in the Florida organization as he was selected in the 21st round.

Fountain was Saint Mary's Friday starter and at times was nearly untouchable. The senior tossed a one-hit complete game shutout against Georgetown, adding 10 Ks en route to being named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week.

Fountain continued to baffle opposing hitters by striking out five or more in a game seven times including another 10 punch out performance against Southern Utah in only six innings.

Fountain led the Gaels in wins with a 7-4 record in 14 starts. The senior struck out 68 in 90 innings while adding a complete game shutout. Fountain finished the season with a 5.40 ERA.

Like Madden, Fountain also improved his draft status by staying in school. The senior was selected in the 31st round by the Oakland A's in 2003.
